Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest health threats of the 21st century. Each year, millions of infections around the world become harder to treat because existing antibiotics are losing their effectiveness. At the Ineos Oxford Institute (IOI), we are working at the cutting edge of science to find new solutions.
Our research teams are exploring multiple pathways to overcome resistance. One area of focus is designing next-generation antibiotics that are able to bypass the resistance mechanisms developed by bacteria. By studying how bacteria adapt at the genetic and molecular level, we can identify weaknesses and create more effective compounds.
We are also investigating alternative therapies such as bacteriophages—natural viruses that specifically target bacteria. This approach could revolutionize treatment by providing targeted therapies without disrupting the body’s healthy microbiome.
Beyond the lab, IOI researchers collaborate with policymakers and healthcare professionals to ensure that scientific breakthroughs translate into real-world impact. Our mission is not just to develop new drugs, but to change how society manages antibiotic use for a healthier future.
